There is a distinct kind of magic that happens when teamwork and hard work collide. For Vanessa Zhang, that magic is currently on full display in Cambridge and across the collegiate ranks.

Hailing from Vancouver, Zhang has taken her game to new heights. Now a junior on the Harvard University women's golf team, Zhang is proving that you truly can have it all: world-class academics at an Ivy League powerhouse, elite-level athletic competition, and mentoring others when the pressure is highest.

Back-to-Back Brilliance in the Fall Again

Zhang’s recent stretch of golf has been nothing short of electric. To kick off October, she traveled to Connecticut for the prestigious Yale Invitational. Playing in what she described as a "flow state", Zhang finished at six-under-par sharing individual co-champion honours alongside teammate Rayee Feng. The two were 5 strokes clear of the next competitor.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Zhang followed up by closing out Harvard’s fall slate in style at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in Delaware. Opening with a sensational 67, featuring six birdies, Zhang secured the individual crown at 3-under-par. With this victory, she etched her name in the tournament’s history books as one of only three golfers to ever win the tournament multiple times. She also won it in 2025 in back-to-back wins proving just how much she loves autumn golf.

"We’re happy to have the two weeks of rest and then to get back out there and end the season with a bang" Zhang shared earlier this fall with The Harvard Crimson. True to her word, she delivered a thunderous exclamation point to the Crimson's fall campaign.

Balancing the Crimson Standard

Getting into Harvard is a monumental achievement, let alone earning a roster spot on an NCAA Division I team and asserting yourself as a premier player. In the most recent women’s Canadian Amateur Golf rankings, she is currently number eight. Zhang has successfully transitioned from the junior golf circuits of British Columbia to the demanding Ivy League course loads, rigorous travel, and practice schedules.

A Leader and Mentor

As a junior, Zhang has also stepped into a vital leadership role for the Crimson. Having once been the newcomer looking to upperclassmen for guidance, she now relishes the opportunity to mentor Harvard's incoming freshmen—including co-champion teammate Rayee Feng. Feng recently told The Harvard Crimson about Zhang saying, “She’s definitely one of the best mentors ever”.

With the fall season wrapped up in stellar fashion, Zhang has become a shining beacon of inspiration for young golfers back home in Canada.
